Prevention vs. Treatment

Benjamin Franklin said in 1736, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This has become quite a good saying to represent the importance of preventative care. It is far easier to prevent disease and pollution than it is to reverse the effects of it. The same is definitely true in regards to tooth decay and periodontal disease. Summer Creek Dental wants you to be in the know when it comes to dental healthcare. Contact us today if you have any questions regarding your dental health or to schedule an appointment with us right away. Oral-Systemic Link Your daily regiment will reflect on the health of your teeth and gums. To be healthy for as long as you can, you must keep up with your oral health. Many other health problems can arise if you fail to do this. Gum disease has been linked to early heart problems, headaches, sleep apnea, and many more health concerns. Bad breathe is not the only thing you have to worry about when you forget to brush your teeth, emotional and physical issues are known to occur, such as depression and much more. Dental Health – Prevention Your oral health affects your overall health and well-being, so be sure to follow these simple steps to good oral hygiene. Brushing your teeth after every meal is vital in removing tartar and plaque build-up. Flossing and rinsing every day to remove bacteria from in between your teeth. Using antiseptic mouthwash once a day kills bacteria that causes plaque. Be aware of your diet, too much sugar will cause tooth decay. Avoid sugary drinks and dark sodas like the plague. Regular tap water contains fluoride to aid with oral health. Visit the dentist twice a year for professional teeth cleaning. By taking your dental health prevention seriously, you will see immediate benefits and avoid potential problems later in life. Dental Health – Treatment Even with all the preventative care in the world, you will still eventually have some sort of dental problem or cavity arise at some point in your life. That is why we are here to help you through it. Summer Creek Dental wants to get you back to your best self with our dental care services. If you need to speak with someone today please feel free to call now, otherwise, you can contact us to schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience. Dental Implants Vs Dental Bridges

When it comes to missing teeth, you have a few options to consider. The two most common options are dental implants and dental bridges. But which method is really the best answer for you? Are there downsides to either option and what do they both really mean? Let the experts at Summer Creek Dental break it down for you. Differences Between Dental Implants & Dental Bridges Dental implants are fairly new to the world of dentistry, but bridges have been around for much longer. With dental implants, you can easily replace just the missing tooth, with little to no damage to the surrounding teeth. If you’re missing multiple teeth, implants can still be used to fill in the spaces. If the tooth loss has happened somewhat recently, with minimal damage to the gums, and jaw bone, implants are usually recommended. If the loss happened some time ago, bridges might be the best option for replacement. When dealing with bridges, your missing tooth, or teeth, won’t be the only thing affected. When installing a dental bridge, your dentist will chip away at the enamel of the surrounding teeth, to help create the bridge itself, and to help properly position it. Bridges work better if the tooth loss happened a while ago, if there’s gum decay, or if the surviving teeth near the gap have large fillings or their own dental issues. Which Is More Durable? If you’re wanting to go for the most durable option, you should consider dental implants, after discussing it with your dentist. The metal center of the implant is usually made with medical grade titanium, which actually allows the implant to fuse with your jaw bone, naturally integrating your new implant into the rest of your mouth. Since the titanium is medical grade, it often cuts down on the chances of rejection, and infection during the healing process. Dental bridges, on the other hand, requires much more upkeep, and even replacements over time. After all, a bridge is only good for about 10 years, before it needs to be replaced. Since bridges affect nearby teeth, normal wear and tear can lead to damage of healthy teeth, and even failure, if not taken care of properly. Chances for decay and gum disease are usually higher with bridges, as well. Which Is More Affordable? One of the biggest questions that pop up when it comes to implants VS bridges is the cost. When it comes to upfront costs, dental bridges are often the less expensive option of filling in missing teeth. Just because bridges are less expensive to start off with, though, doesn’t mean that the price won’t add up in the long run. Remember, the lifespan for bridges is only 10 years, and that doesn’t take into consideration the possibilities of bridges failing before they’ve reached their life expectancy. On the other hand, dental implants cost much more upfront, versus traditional dental bridges. After all, when dealing with dental implants, you’re dealing with a surgical process when it comes to the actual insertion. While there is a slim chance that your dental implant may fail or be rejected, most patients find that after their first dental implant, they never have to get the same one replaced again. Not only that, but dentists are often more willing to offer payment plans for dental implants. Happy Holidays from Humble Dentist The holiday season is upon us! Summer Creek Dental, your Humble Dentist, wants to wish you happy holidays this year and give you some healthy dental advice while we have your attention. The cold weather can make us take on some bad habits when it comes to oral hygiene. While a cup of hot cocoa or an extra cup of coffee can be very warming and pleasant, you should always remember to brush those teeth afterward! The dark pigment in certain drinks, like coffee and soda, can get stuck inside the tiny ridges of our teeth and cause a yellowing and staining of the tooth enamel. Sometimes preventative measures go further than treatment of an already developing problem when it comes to staying healthy. For those of you unable to cut back on caffeine in your diet, try not letting the coffee (or soda) come into prolonged and unnecessary contact with your actual teeth. This may help reduce the acceleration of the yellowing process.   Humble Dentist 77044 Come and see us at our Humble Dentist Office this holiday for your next teeth whitening or for your next regular checkup. Summer Creek Dental is your home for advanced general dentistry in the Humble Texas area. Common Dental Myths

Everyone always knows best, right? That’s why we have millions of old wives’ tales, and myths floating around out there. Unfortunately, these myths can often lead to people not taking the proper care of their teeth, and can lead to major decay and other dental issues. Summer Creek Dental is here to help with your dental services Humble, and to help put these 5 common dental myths to bed, for good! 5 Most Common Dental Myths Bleaching Weakens Your Teeth While it’s always good to be wary of things that can weaken your teeth and enamel, bleaching isn’t one of those things. As long as you’re following the directions to the letter, or are getting your teeth professional bleached and whitened, you should be fine! After all, the procedure, or kits, only affect the color of your teeth, not the actual structure itself. If you bleach your teeth too much you may see a slight transparency in your teeth, but that doesn’t mean they have weakened any, it’s just a color change. Never Brush Bleeding Gums This one seems like common sense, right? If your gums are sensitive and bleeding, it’s best NOT to brush them, and let them heal, right? Wrong. Bleeding gums mean that your gum aren’t healthy, yes, but a buildup of food particles and plaque are what CAUSE them to be unhealthy. If you’re dealing with bleeding gums, the best thing to do is brush your gums gently to help clear the plaque build up and get your gums healthy again. Bad Breath Means You’re Bad at Brushing While bad breath CAN be caused by poor brushing and other dental hygiene, it’s not the only cause of it. Dry mouth, which is often caused by various medications, can cause bad breath, as well as the food you eat too (obviously!).  Aspirin on a Sore Tooth Gets Rid of Pain This seems to be one the most popular dental myths out there, because it’s partially true. Aspirin IS a painkiller, and it CAN help with toothaches, but simply putting a tablet on your tooth and hoping for it to get better isn’t going to cut it. It can, however, lead to nasty burns on the inside of your mouth if you leave the tablet there for too long. It’s best to simply swallow the aspirin, wait for it to help with the pain some, and then see a professional dentist about your tooth ache. You’ll thank us in the long run. Too Much Sugar Rots Your Teeth This is by far the most common dental myth there is. After all, how often have you heard something sweet referred to as ‘teeth rotting’? And while excessive amounts of sugar can lead to tooth decay, it’s not the sugar itself that’s causing it. What actually causes decay in your teeth is the naturally occurring bacteria found in your mouth. They feed off of sugar, yes, so when you eat a lot of sugary food without brushing your teeth regularly, you’re giving the bacteria more fuel to grow and harm your teeth.

5 Common Dental Problems

The 5 Most Common Humble Dental Problems Your teeth are an important part of you that often don’t receive the care that they really need in order to stay as healthy as possible. Here at Summer Creek Dental, we see all of the common Humble dental problems that affect our patients. Luckily, we can help you quickly fix these problems! Gum Disease When people think of taking care of their teeth, they usually only think of the teeth themselves, which can lead to problems with your gums. Bacteria in your mouth can cause an infection that slowly destroys your gums, and the ligaments that hold your teeth in place. There are five stages of gum disease, and Summer Creek Dental can help you catch it early, and quickly help you get rid of the infection. If you’re dealing with bleeding gums, contact Summer Creek Dental to schedule an appointment today. Tooth Decay Before modern dentistry it was common to have missing, broken, or cavity riddled teeth brought on by poor hygiene and lack of tooth care. These days, stopping tooth decay is as easy as good dental hygiene and regular checkup with your family dentist. Sometimes though, it’s too late to prevent cavities, brought on by bacteria and plaque emitting an acid that erodes tooth enamel, and a trip to the dentist is needed. Luckily, the team here at Summer Creek Dental is well versed in filling and preventing cavities. Infected Teeth If you’ve ever had an infected tooth, you knew about it pretty early on in the infection. When bacteria make their way to the root of your tooth, they infect the nerves and pulp tissue that make up the bottom and inside of your teeth. It can be extremely painful, and the treatment often gets a bad reputation for being just as painful as the infection. When you come to Summer Creek Dental with an infected tooth, we promise that your root canal will be as painless as we can possible make it.   Dry Mouth When most people hear the term ‘dry mouth’, they don’t really consider it to be a problem. After all, once you drink some water, you’re good, right? Dealing with constant dry mouth can be a bit more difficult to deal with. If you’re suffering from constant dry mouth it could be due to a number of reasons like medication you’re currently taking, or even genetic predisposition. Whatever the reason may be, your mouth and teeth need that moisture to help protect your teeth from tooth decay. Summer Creek Dental can help you get to the bottom of your dry mouth, and help you protect your teeth. Enamel Loss The outside of your teeth is what is known as the ‘enamel’, and it’s main function is to act as the protective layer of your teeth. Unfortunately, your enamel can be destroyed, and once it’s gone there’s only so much you can do to fix the problem. Sweet sugary foods, soda, acidic foods and drinks, and even brushing too hard or too much can lead to a loss of your teeth’s enamel. Summer Creek Dental can help you slow the process, and can help you protect the enamel that you have left!   If you or a loved one are suffering from these 5 common Humble Dental problems, don’t stress! Summer Creek Dental is here to help! With an amazingly kind and knowledgeable staff, and wonderful doctors, you get the best treatment when you pick Summer Creek Dental. If you’re ready to save your smile, contact us to schedule your appointment!

Summer Creek Dental Veneers Humble Texas Visit Summer Creek Dental dentist in Humble Texas Dr. Tammie Thibodeaux DDS Dr. Samer Dar DDS, MD Dr. Katherine Price

Porcelain Veneers Humble Texas

Looking For The Highest Quality Porcelain Veneers Humble Texas? A veneer is a thin covering over another surface. In dentistry, a veneer is a wafer-thin layer of super-strong porcelain that convincingly substitutes for natural tooth enamel. When bonded to your teeth, veneers can create a natural-looking, beautiful new surface. That’s because dental porcelain, like natural tooth enamel, is translucent and tough. But it doesn’t stain like tooth enamel does. Limitations of Porcelain Veneers There are some situations in which veneers would be inappropriate. For example, if you have significantly misaligned teeth or a large gap, orthodontics might be a more appropriate solution than veneers. And if you have lost a lot of tooth structure from decay or trauma (or a particularly severe grinding habit), it might be better to restore your teeth with porcelain crowns that cover the entire tooth. For more information check out this article on Veneers Atascocita. Creating a New Smile with Porcelain Veneers The first step in creating a new smile with porcelain veneers is to communicate exactly what you don’t like about your smile as it is now. It’s a great idea to bring in pictures of smiles you do like, as a starting point for discussion. It’s possible to see how veneers would look on your teeth in one of several ways. A model of your teeth can be created over which wax “veneers” can be placed; sometimes acrylic (plastic) or tooth-colored filling material can be placed directly onto your teeth to demonstrate the effect veneers would have on them. Once the plan has been agreed upon, your teeth will be prepared by removing a small amount of enamel, if this step is necessary. Molds of your teeth will be taken and used by a skilled dental laboratory to create your veneers, and you will receive a temporary set of veneers to wear during the few weeks it will take to create your permanent veneers. When the veneers come back from the lab, they will be cemented onto your teeth. How To Care For Your Veneers Just like the teeth nature gave you, teeth restored with veneers need gentle brushing and flossing every day. This will remove dental plaque and ensure good gum tissue health around the veneers. Regular checkups at the dental office will remain as important as always to your oral and general health. Keep in mind that as tough as veneers are, they may not be able to withstand forces that come from using your teeth as tools (to open packages, for example) or biting into very hard foods like candy apples — which isn’t good for your natural teeth, either! And if you grind or clench your teeth at night, you might be advised to get a custom-made nightguard to protect your veneers — and your investment. The Dental Industry Is Always Improving Recent years have brought remarkable advances in dental porcelain technology. These days, veneers can be made so thin that they can sometimes be bonded directly onto your existing tooth surface. In other cases, a very thin layer of tooth enamel needs to be removed to fit the new porcelain surface. This improves the strength and makes it look as lifelike as possible. Either way, the results are sure to make you smile. Versatility of Porcelain Veneers Humble Veneers can be used to improve any of the following characteristics of your teeth: Color — Teeth can become stained by the foods and drinks we like, from smoking, and even normal aging. Veneers are available in numerous shades, from the most natural to the brightest Hollywood white. Size & Shape — Teeth can become worn down from grinding habits, or may not have the shape or size you want to begin with. For example, some people consider rounder teeth more feminine and squarer teeth more masculine. Veneers can be shaped and sized in whichever way is most flattering to your face. Alignment & Spacing — Veneers can be used to close small gaps between teeth or make slight corrections in alignment while improving tooth color and shape.
